These fresh holes are the amazing recent work of a pileated woodpecker foraging for food. The pileated is one of the largest woodpeckers, reaching up to 2 feet long, yet is very shy, and is seldom seen close up. This is a solid cherry tree, which is hollow inside with carpenter ants and the pileated has drilled holes to get to them. About one foot above Tims head is the start of another hole just visible as a small spot. We could hear the sound of this pileated before we arrived with its jackhammer-on-wood echoes throughout the hollow. We did not have any photos of a Pileated so we borrowed one from Maria, who has a website with lots of other bird pictures.
Maria has generously allowed us to use the copyrighted image of the Pileated Woodpecker from her website at http://www.birdperch.com and can only be used with her permission. Location is Pearl River WMA, Louisianna and date of the photograph is 02/14/2001.
